Maybe the definition of a village is excessive, Maam Cross is, in fact, a crossroad from which branch off many of the roads that cross Connemara. Just at the intersection of the roads stands the Peacocke's Hotel, with a bar, a restaurant, and a gift shop (avoid it if there are buses of tourists!). Next to the hotel, there is a copy of the cottage used in The Quiet Man movie.

All year round on Saturday mornings a lively cattle mart is held in the area behind the Peacocke's: all the local farmers converge here to buy and sell cows, sheep and sheepdogs, hay and wellingtons. Moo and Baa fill the air, while the scent of bacon and coffee spreads all around...
